It led along the ridge lines of the Elster Mountains to the Altvater Mountains. Today the trail leads over the highest summits of the Erz Mountains and the Vogtland and runs from Altenberg-Geising to Blankenstein on 289 kilometers (179 miles) and 17 single stages. The route is characterized by its idyllic location and breathtaking flora and fauna. For example, it leads past the Schneckenstein near the Klingen Valley, one of two existing topaz rocks all over the world.
